What Are the Best Ways to Keep Your Jewelry Looking Like New?
Jewelry is meant to be worn and loved—but with regular care, it can continue to look beautiful for years to come. So many of my clients bring me pieces that are in desperate need of cleaning, and the transformation after a simple refresh is always amazing. Once the stones are cleaned and reset, they’re sparkling like new and often look completely different!
Here are my go-to tips for keeping your jewelry looking its best. The good news? None of these methods take more than five minutes.
1. Use a Jewelry Polishing Cloth
Jewelry polishing cloths—often made from chamois—are perfect for quick maintenance, especially for silver, brass, or copper, which are prone to tarnishing.
Many polishing cloths are double-layered. The ones I use are white on the inside and blue on the outside:
- White layer: Removes tarnish
- Blue layer: Buffs and adds shine
This is one of the easiest and safest ways to restore luster to your jewelry at home.
2. Try a 3M Microfine or Ultrafine Sanding Sponge (For Satin Finishes Only)
If your jewelry has a satin or matte finish, a 3M microfine or ultrafine sanding sponge can help remove minor blemishes and scratches.
- Not suitable for mirror or high-polish finishes
- Flexible design works well on both flat and rounded surfaces
- Ideal for refreshing worn satin textures
Used correctly, this method can make a noticeable difference without altering the character of the piece.
3. Use a Dremel With a Satin Wheel
If you have access to a Dremel tool, a satin wheel can be used to gently improve the finish on jewelry with a satin surface.
- Helps remove small blemishes
- Buffs and evens out the finish
- Final result depends on the fineness of the wheel
⚠️ This method should not be used on jewelry with a shiny or mirror finish, as it will alter the surface.
4. Clean With an Ultrasonic Cleaner
Ultrasonic cleaners are excellent for jewelry with prong-set, bezel-set, or flush-set gemstones. They work by using vibrations to loosen and remove dirt from hard-to-reach areas.
- Home ultrasonic cleaners are available for under $100
- Many jewelry stores will clean your pieces for you if you don’t own one
This method can dramatically improve sparkle, especially for diamond and gemstone jewelry.
Final Thoughts
Regular cleaning and light maintenance can completely transform your jewelry. These simple steps take just a few minutes but make a huge difference in how your pieces look and feel. You’ll be amazed at how fresh and brilliant your jewelry can be—and you’ll be glad you took the time to care for it.
