After working with several dozen couples to create their perfect engagement bands and wedding rings, I have realized that there are so many decisions that it can be overwhelming to think about!

I want to give a little bit of advice and food for thought for you if you are just starting the journey into getting bands made, whether you are just getting married or you want to get special rings made to celebrate an anniversary.

Size

Width

How wide of a band do you want? Many men’s rings are 6-10 mm wide and  women’s rings range from 2-6 mm wide. These are just guidelines though, so if you have a different vision, go for it!

Thickness

Some bands are thinner and some are thicker.

Thinner bands can be better for people who don’t like the feeling of rings- they will have a slimmer profile.

Thicker bands have a little more heft to them.

Finish

There are many different types of finish you can have on your ring.

You can choose a high polish finish or more of a softer satin finish.

Metal

There are many metal options.

Sterling silver is a very affordable option. Sterling can tarnish over time but usually rings won’t tarnish since they are worn all the time and washed with hand washing.

Gold comes in several different colors and karat options. Yellow gold, rose gold and white gold are the most common. The karat refers to the purity of the gold, and typically rings come in 14 karat or 18 karat.

Palladium is a silvery white metal that is harder than sterling, platinum and gold and is very rare.

Platinum is a silvery white metal that is harder than sterling and gold.

Other considerations

Do you want stones? If so what type of stones and how would you like them to be set?

Are you ok with man made stones or do you want only genuine stones?

What shape do you want the stone to be?

Think about whether you want something engraved on the inside of the ring.
